NORNext Match - Round of 16
Norway will be facing Brazil in there next round of 16 match which is sheduled in New York New Jersey, East Rutherford, USA on 5th July 2026.
Starting Lineups
The team from Côte d'Ivoire entered the field in a fully packed Dallas Stadium with a highly dynamic and strong playing style that was a 4-3-3. The goalkeeping position was manned by Yahia Fofana who had a solid defensive back four comprising of central defenders Evan Ndicka and Emmanuel Agbadou who were positioned with Wilfried Singo and Hassane Kamara playing on the right and left respectively. In the middle of the pitch, the midfield department depended on a well-balanced three-man force with Franck Kessié, Seko Fofana, and Ibrahim Sangaré.
Norway went for their very structured and tactically devastating formation, which has been designed to service their amazing front line. Starting goalkeeper for Norway was Ørjan Nyland, behind whom stood their very structured defense with Julian Ryerson on the right side of defense, David Møller Wolfe on the left and center-back pairing of Leo Østigård and Kristoffer Ajer. Patrick Berg was the defensive shield for Norway in midfield, which meant that their creative genius, Martin Ødegaard was the playmaker with Kristian Thorstvedt. On the wings were Antonio Nusa and Alexander Sørloth, who had the job of servicing the central striker, Erling Haaland.
The Managers
The tactical chess game played between the two coaches from the dugouts was one filled with an intriguing contrast of tactical ideologies. The coach of the Côte d'Ivoire national team, Emerse Faé, stuck with the high intensity nature of the side by telling his full backs to push up and use numbers locally to overload wide areas. However, on the other end, the coach of the Norwegian national team, Ståle Solbakken, made his tactical ideology work brilliantly through some pragmatism.
Previous Head-to-Head Match
In terms of history, there was basically no background to this important meeting at all, making for quite an interesting tactical question mark for those watching. Before this huge knockout game between these two national sides, neither of them had faced off against each other in any tournament format before. This meant that there was absolutely no prior information that could weigh down the coaches, and they both had to adapt their tactics on the spot during the match.
The Decisive Goals
In the 39th minute, the game suddenly sprung to life when Norway scored against the run of play. With a superbly created pocket of space by Martin Ødegaard, Antonio Nusa was able to receive a pass from the left flank, quickly turn and curl a breathtaking goal with power into the top corner past a diving Yahia Fofana. Ivorians did not give up hope and managed to score the much deserved equalizer in the 74th minute, where he managed to break through two Norwegian defenders following a fantastic exchange of passes with Nicolas Pépé, and score a clinical goal with a wonderful shot into the bottom corner. But unfortunately, the ultimate agony was yet to come for the Elephants in the 86th minute where Patrick Berg sent a delightful low cross into the six yard area, giving Erling Haaland an easy tap-in to seal victory for his team.
Substitutes and In-Game Changes
As the sheer physicality of the high tempo game took its toll, changes from the touchline came into effect in the second half of the game, affecting the way the game panned out. Emerse Faé pulled off a masterstroke by making the double substitution on the hour mark by bringing in Oumar Diakité and Amad Diallo, thereby rejuvenating his ineffective wing attack, which paid immediate dividends as Diallo struck the equalizer. While Norway were receiving wave after wave of attacks, defensive changes came to rescue them. Solbakken brought in Morten Thorsby, Sander Berge and Hugo Vetlesen in the midfield to stifle the Ivorian momentum and get the knockout blow through Haaland.
Writer's Thoughts
And this was exactly why Round of 32 matches are all about margins in football. Looking at the structure of the match, the Ivory Coast team delivered a fantastic game that saw them dominate possession while managing to rack up an unbelievable 14 corners. But in the end, football is played by generations of finishers. And what made the difference between these two teams was Erling Haaland's capability to stay quiet in parts of the match and then make sure he capitalized on one big chance to score. As the Elephants go back home with their heads held high, the Norwegians move on to face a big Round of 16 clash against Brazil, showing their ability to withstand the pressure of the biggest stage.
